Rescue Dog Photos

These pics of rescue dogs show just how well-loved they are... regardless of where they came from. If you're considering adding another pet to your household, please consider adopting from an animal shelter, a pet rescue organization, or a humane society/SPCA - there are so many loving pets just waiting for a home.

"I always enjoy reading the newsletter! I frequently find useful tips and have relied on recommended pet-friendly accommodations.

This is Lady! Lady is a retriever X rescued dog from the Winnipeg Humane Society. She was first adopted at the age of two by an elderly gentleman who nurtured her to a healthier existence. We don't know what happened to Lady before her stay with Humane Society but when she was there she was considered unadoptable due to her strong timidity. Well, it is 10 years later and Lady never ceases to amaze me. I adopted Lady when her owner passed away. Since then Lady has adjusted well to a life with a career woman. She is so intelligent and rises to any challenge. She loves to please and is a great pupil when it comes to learning and training. She is adaptable, tolerant and with a great disposition that allows her to go anywhere with me. She exhibits great docility toward children, elderly, people in general and other pets. She has two best buddies, Minette, a five year old cat adopted out of humane society and Willow, a golden pup we added to the clan two years ago. Lady is a great love and I feel blessed to have been able to be her owner!"
-Louise from Winnipeg, Manitoba

"Brodee (in the red raincoat), a 1½ year old Schnerrier, is a rescue dog, who was abandoned in the woods at 2½ months of age in Indiana. We drove from Toronto in a blizzard to get him from a rescue facility when he was 7 months of age. Lara, a pure-bred black Schnauzer is going to be 3 years of age on April 3rd. We love them and they love us as well as each other."
- Greg & Dee C.

"I adopted Kato on April 26/1995 from the Kelowna SPCA. He was about one year old then and is about 13 1/2 now. He is absolutely my best friend and this is a silly picture of him doing one of his favourite things - boating. While out on Okanagan Lake he can also be spotted taking a tube ride behind the boat or swimming out after anything that moves!"
- Bernie T. from Peachland, B.C.

"This is 4 year old Dundee. My wife and I rescued Dundee via the Ontario Aussie Rescue Association 2 years ago and now he's my best buddy. Dundee was living in Ottawa at the time and had been in 5 different homes in two years. My wife and I like the work the rescue association does so much, that we decided to become a foster home for dogs waiting for new owners. It's a very rewarding experience."
- Jim and Jane S. of Burlington, Ontario

"I thought I would send along a great shot of our two dachshunds at Xmas. Both are rescue dogs, one from the Canadian Rescue League and the long haired one came from the North American Rescue Association. The smooth coat is Brennan who is 5 and Finnegan is 2 and a half years old. We just call them 'the Boys'."

"This is my dog Turbo with my nephew. Turbo was rescued by SCARS (Second Chance Animal Rescue Society) with his litter mates and we adopted him when he was barely 8 weeks old. He is a sweet boy who just turned one in August."
- Stacy from Stony Plain, Alberta

"Hi! My little sweet dog's name is Tommy. We live in South America, Brasil, Sao Paulo. I got him when 2 boys were going to kill him. He was very miserable, skinny, bones and skin. His weight was 450 grams. Now after 4 years with me, he is very nice, shiny fur, 2.2 pounds. He is old, the vet told me he might be 14 years, but he is very clever . Hope you like this picture. All my best." - Vera

"Maxy, our 6-year-old Springer Spaniel, and Cupie (SPCA rescue 4 years ago), our 8-year-old Border Collie Cross, complete our lives in more ways than one."
- Vicky in Calgary, Alberta

"Left: Bala is our playful 7 yr old Lab/Malamute. She is a rescue puppy from the Gravenhurst Animal Shelter. She loves to run in the tall grass at the "Common", the off-leash dog park we share with many other dog lovers!

Right: Bala with her friends, Sally (Dalmatian) & Henry (Labradoodle)."

- Jody E. from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

"This is a picture of my rescue dog Spike. He is about 6-8 yrs old and was a owner surrender. We've had him now since Aug/08 and he is a great dog, so loving, and he is a snuggle bunnie. He has 3 other sisters to play with, all dogs - another min pin and shepherd cross and a rottweiler. He's made a great companion to us all."
- Tammy L.

"Lucy the Wire Fox Terrier Beagle Mix and Cloe the Lemon Beagle adopted from Take Me Home. My daughter adopted Cloe and we have our beautiful Lucy, who is the joy of our life."
- Sandra H. from Stoufville, Ontario

"My lovely girl Gracie, a 2 year old Cockalier, and her cat, Lily, an 8 year old rescue from the Humane Society. They are enjoying a little winter sunshine in January on a bench in their backyard. A very sweet pair."
- Donna from Kingston, Ontario

"This is Precious, an abandoned Old English Sheepdog. We collected her from Oshawa in August 2006, a very sad emaciated animal. She had been neglected, faeces covered her fur and paws and legs yellow from urine. She had been beaten and was left with sore ribs and a mangled eye. She has lost the sight in her eye but oh what a beautiful dog she has developed into. Long legged and gangly and with the biggest paws I have ever seen. She is the most delightful, funny, loving dog anyone would be proud to own."
- Daphne B. from St Catharine's

"This is Yoda, adopted from the BCSPCA in Burnaby, BC. He was found neglected and wandering the streets. I got him in Feb 2006 & he has been a loveable wee angel ever since. I think he looks so proud in this photo. I would recommend anyone looking for a pet to go to a shelter."
- Dorothy M.

"This is Harley, our 3-year-old Daschund. We rescued him from a shelter in Northern Quebec at the tender age of 9 months! He had been in the shelter for 3 months!"
- Theresa from Highland Creek, Ontario

"This is Zali our new little princess, and Nimo our little prince, both adorable shih tzus, adopted from SOS dog rescue in Quebec. The second photo is of our 3rd baby from the SOS rescue team, and he's 7 months old according to the vet, we are not sure if he's a shih tzu or a Lhasa Apso, but he has a great personality. He just had a hair cut because he was in real bad shape. He was abandoned over the fence of the dog pound in Quebec, the operator of the pound found him the next morning... and now the sad story has a happy ending!
- Amira & John, Etobicoke, Ontario

"Weezie is a Hurricane Katrina rescue. She was in pretty bad shape when she was rescued - about half her normal weight, and very, very frightened of everyone and everything. Today she is my sweetface, a clown, a goof and a snugglebum." - Vicki M. of Creston, B.C.

"Sandie (whippett/staffie cross) taking a nap after a bath. We got Sandie from the Vancouver SPCA and she's awesome." - Neil H.

"I love your newsletter! This is Jackie (or by her 'full' name Jackie Gingersnap!). We adopted her from the Toronto Humane Society in October 2003 after a television appearance on CP24. She was just so beautiful, and her story of being abandoned in an apartment after her original owners moved broke our hearts. We knew then we just had to have her! She was 8 years old at that time, and she also had had cancerous tumors removed from her front legs, with a 50/50 chance of it returning. That did not deter us in the least! We took her home, gave her all the love & attention we could pour out, and she fell in love with us too. Her cancer did come back - in both legs - but thanks to the great folks at the Ontario Vet College in Guelph, we had the tumors removed and radiation done. She has been cancer free ever since! I've always believed in fate, and we were meant to see that TV interview that day. She chose us, as much as we chose her and she has brought far more to our lives than we can ever give her!"
- Laura L. of Whitby, Ontario, Canada

Featured Pets "As President of Big Heart Rescue, you can only imagine that I have a house full of companions that share their home with me! And so I went to go to bed one night and discovered this!"
- Gail Moerkerken (Gabriola, BC)
