The peak holiday season is coming to an end. However,
this is still an excellent time to travel. If you've
never taken an off-season getaway, consider:
- The cooler temperatures are often preferred by our
furry friends.
- It's usually less crowded. You can enjoy a quieter,
more peaceful getaway.
- Accommodations are often cheaper after September! (not
including prime ski destinations, whose 'high season'
occurs in the winter) You can find some great deals
if you're willing to travel in the 'off-peak season'.
- There are still many things to see after the peak
summer season, such as the fall colours in Ontario
and Quebec... or the storm-watching season out on
the west coast... or the spectacular Canadian Rockies
blanketed in fresh snow.

By the way, the PET FRIENDLY crew went on a much-needed
"micro-holiday" to the spectacular Kootenay National Park
in beautiful British Columbia. We stayed at the peaceful
Kootenay Park Lodge. These guys are the very definition
of "pet-friendly"! Read all about it -- and see the
photos -- by clicking here.
Have a great month, and see you again in October.

FIVE TIPS FOR BOOKING PET-FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION
- Always mention your pets when inquiring or at the time
of reservation. We've always found that it helps to let
the accommodation manager know a bit about our pets,
ie. their size, manners, etc. and to reassure them that
we're responsible pet owners (PLEASE be responsible!
We're all ambassadors for the pet-toting travellers
that come after us. For a list of 'pet etiquette' tips,
go to http://www.pawsitivepets.com/ ). Keep in mind that
some pets truly are happier staying at home in familiar
surroundings.
- Ask for details about the pet policy. Better to
understand all the pet policies prior to booking, then
to arrive at your destination and be surprised. Please
comply with all pet policies during your stay. If you
don't like the policies, seek out an accommodation
whose policies are more in line with your own.
- Book early when possible. Many accommodations have a
limited number of pet-friendly rooms available and your
chances of getting one increase the earlier you book.
- If you need accommodations within just a few days,
CALL them rather than email (or follow-up your email
with a phone call). It takes time to reply to emails.
A phone call will often get you the information you
require more quickly.
- If you don't get a reply to your email inquiry, pick
up the phone and call. There are lots of reasons why
an email can go unanswered... unfortunately, these
things happen, and a phone call may be in order.
FEATURED: OTTAWA, ONTARIO
Ottawa, the Canadian capital, is located just four hours
from Toronto and two hours from Montreal, at the junction
of three picturesque rivers.
- Ottawa is home to some of the finest museums, galleries
and historical sites, including Rideau Hall, the
National Gallery of Canada, and of course, the
Parliament buildings.
- Visit the Rideau Canal! In the winter, skating on the
frozen Rideau Canal (the world's longest skating rink)
is a popular past-time -- one that some people would
consider a "must-do" experience! In the summer, the
Rideau is a great place for recreational boaters. Boat
rentals and tours are available.
- The arts, festivals, and events are abundant. Some of
the upcoming events include:
- The Ottawa International Animation Festival,
Sept 22-26 -- see the best new animation from
around the world!
- Fall Rhapsody, October 2-17, at the Gatineau Park.
Experience the magical fall colours!
- Winterlude, Weekends, February 4-20, 2004 -- North
America's largest winter festival featuring snow
slides, ice and snow sculptures, live shows,
workshops and skating on the Rideau Canal.
- Gatineau Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts. This
363-square kilometer park offers trails and facilities
for both day-use and overnight stays.
- If you love hiking / walking, visit The National Capital
Greenbelt. The greenbelt has over 100 km of trails that
feed into parts of the Trans Canada Trail, Rideau Trail
and Capital Pathway network. Note that pets must be on
leash and are only permitted on certain trails. For
more information on park rules regarding pets,
- And of course, there are many parks and recreational
facilities, shopping, dining, and opportunities for
sightseeing and touring.

NOTE: Not all events or attractions permit pets. Please
contact them directly prior to bringing your pet.
