With the holidays coming up, many people are planning to
hit the ski hills for a little winter recreation... and
you won't have to leave your pets behind, either. Some
lodgings in popular ski destinations will permit pets so
that you can go out for a day on the slopes and return
for some down-time with the pooch. Check out:
- Collingwood or Blue Mountain, Ontario
- The Canadian Rockies in Alberta (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise)
- Whistler, British Columbia
Just go to www.petfriendly.ca/search.php to locate
accommodations for you and your pets. Be sure to ask about
their pet policies -- and arrange for a doggy daycare or
short-term pet-sitter if you require one.
Pets As Gifts
Please don't give a pet as a gift. Everyone should be
able to make their own decision about what type of animal
they want to get - if any at all. Pet ownership is a
rewarding experience, however, there's no denying that
it can be a lot of work, too.
If you think a friend or family member wants a pet, give
them a gift certificate to adopt a pet of their choice
from the local SPCA or rescue organization... or wrap
up a gift basket filled with great pet accessories
instead. This way, the new pet owner gets to choose a
pet that fits his or her lifestyle and personality -
and the new pet can enjoy plenty of love and attention
after the busy holiday season is over!
Pet-Friendly Stocking Stuffers
The holidays are approaching fast! Why not do your shopping
now before the real rush begins? Purchases from the PET
FRIENDLY store will help to support the directory and keep
it freely accessible to all pets and their people.
>>> Until Dec 12, 2004, with the purchase of some items,
you will receive a FREE portable pet travel bowl! These
compact bowls are collapsible and great for car trips,
hikes, and travelling.
We wish you and your family (both two-legged and four-
legged) a happy, healthy holiday season. See you in the
New Year!
See you next month.

"A dog can express more with his tail in minutes than his
owner can express with his tongue in hours."

A RESCUE DOG'S CHRISTMAS POEM
(Author Unknown)
'Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
Every shelter is full... we're lost, but not found.
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
We hope every minute that someone will care.
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max, or Sparky, come fetch your new ball!"
But we sit here and think of the days...
We were treated so fondly... we had cute baby ways.
Once we were little, then we grew and we grew...
Now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
They reacted so quickly... why were they so rash?
We "jump on the children," "don't come when they call,"
We "bark when they leave us," "climb over the wall."
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
Now we suffer the consequences of the errors THEY made.
If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
We'd of done what they asked us and worshipped them too.
We were left in the backyard, or worse, left to roam...
Now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us goodbye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So here we are, all confused and alone...
In a shelter for others who long for a home.
The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
With so many to care for, they can't stay or chat,
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer...
We know that they wonder how long we'll be here.
We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads...
Of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.
Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears...
Our friends filled with emptiness, worry and fear.
If you can't adopt us and there's no room at the Inn...
Could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?
We count on your kindness each day of the year...
Can you give more than hope to everyone here?
Please make a donation to pay for the heat...
And help get us something special to eat.
The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
And more of us will, if more people give.
Our pets are the lucky ones: they have nutritious food,
a warm bed, and families that love them. However, many
homeless and abandoned pets aren't quite so fortunate.
Please consider making a donation to your local SPCA
or rescue organization.
Thank you for caring.

"Our three cats came with us from Romania, last year (a long
13 hours flight), and they are the light of our life!!! We have a girl
(the white one) who traveled with us in the cabin and two boys who are
quieter than the girl (they came in the cargo, the pet section). We love
them deeply and we really enjoy sharing their pictures with all our
pet-loving friends." Sincerely, Ana-Maria and Dragos Trasnea

FEATURED: QUEBEC CITY, QUEBEC
Quebec City, part of "French Canada", will be 400 years
old in the year 2008. The city offers many opportunities
for history buffs, as well as beautiful natural spaces for
those who enjoy the outdoors.
- Visit Old Quebec, a fortified city surrounded by a large
stone wall with a 4.6 km long path that runs on top of
the fortifications.
- Be sure to visit the popular Maple Sugar Shacks, where
you can sample maple sugar treats as well as fine cuisine.
Some shacks feature tours and demonstrations of maple
syrup production.
- Jacques-Cartier National Park, located 40 minutes from
downtown Quebec City, features hiking, canoeing, fishing,
snow-shoeing, and other outdoor pursuits.
- Visit the beautiful parc de la Chute-Montmorency for
spectacular views of river and the city. There you'll
also find an 257 foot waterfall - taller than Niagara

year-round. This restored part of town has the feel
of a small village, with artisans' shops and street
performers lining the narrow streets.
- Enjoy art? Visit the rue du Tresor, where paintings,
prints and drawings are displayed... or stop by rue
Saint-Paul, another popular area.
