Just wanted to tell you about a great new site. It's a
useful resource for all of us pet lovers - as well as one
that does a good deed. Point your browsers to:
www.adoptananimal.ca
This Canadian site focuses on providing information on
as many humane societies and rescue organizations from
across Canada that they can find. They even include
small organizations that would otherwise be difficult
to find.
The next time you're looking to add a pet to the family,
please consider adopting one from a humane society or
animal rescue organization. And don't forget the adult or
senior pets, too -- they have a lot to offer and will bond
to those that love them. It's an incredibly rewarding
experience to give these deserving animals a second
chance at a happy life.
See you next month.
See you next month.

FEATURED PET QUOTES:
"Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions,
they pass no criticisms." (George Eliot)
"...a morning kiss, a discreet touch of his nose landing
somewhere on the middle of my face. Because his whiskers
tickled, I began every day with a smile." (Janet F. Faure)
PHOTOS FROM OUR READERS:
"This is a picture of my poodle Roshi,
doing what he loves to do best - checking out the squirrels."

"Please find attached 2 pics of my yorkies; Bella
(1 yr and 10 months) & Oliver (7 months). They are our
precious little ones that bring us so much joy." - Carole & Todd

SUMMER TIPS FOR PET-TOTING TRAVELLERS
- Please don't leave your pets unattended in the car for
even short periods of time. Even with the windows cracked
open, temperatures in the car can rise dramatically in
just a few minutes and cause illness -- or even death.
Pets cannot regulate their body temperatures as easily
as we can.
If you're simply running a quick chore, have someone
stay in the car with the pet, with the air-conditioning
running. For longer periods, look into doggy daycare or
pet-sitting services. Some accommodations offer these
services; ask them directly if you're unsure.
- Pets should always be kept under control. Much as we love
them, not everyone is a fan! Families with young children
are abundant during the summer holiday months. Remember
that not all pets are comfortable around children. Always
supervise your pet, especially around children.
- If you're travelling to an area where heartworm, fleas,
or ticks are a concern, pick up the appropriate medication
from your vet prior to your trip. You may wish to consult
your vet regarding protection from the West Niles virus as
well.
- Pets need to stay hydrated just as we do! If you're out
hiking, be sure to bring along some water for the pooch
as well. Offer it to him at regular intervals. When
possible, hike early in the day when temperatures are
usually cooler.
- Spending the day picnicking or playing outdoors? Pets
need shade, too. If there's no natural shade (from trees,
buildings, etc), try placing an umbrella in the sand or
use your creativity to erect a shelter with tarps or
blankets.
Have a great summer!

FEATURED: PACIFIC RIM - VANCOUVER ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The towns of Tofino and Ucluelet are located in the area
known as the Pacific Rim, approximately 5 hours from
Victoria or 3 hours from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.
- Enjoy the many family-friendly activities such as
browsing the numerous art galleries and gift shops,
take a boat tour, or spend a peaceful day exploring
the pristine beaches and coves. Plan to visit the
popular and beautiful Long Beach.
- Whale-watching is a popular activity in the spring and
in the fall.
- Water enthusiasts will enjoy activities such as
kayaking, canoeing, salt water fishing, and scuba
diving.
- The Wickaninnish Interpretive Centre introduces
visitors to the history of the Pacific Northwest.
You'll even find telescopes mounted on an observation
deck. Great for all ages!
- Plenty of great restaurants are available to sample
local seafood. In Tofino, the local crab dock (one of
the government wharves) is a good place to buy fresh
seafood.
- There is lots of wonderful dog-friendly hiking in the
area, including the beautiful Gold Mine Beach (an easy
hike that leads to a vast, beautiful, and often deserted
beach), and several popular rainforest hikes in Pacific
Rim National Park.
- The world-famous West Coast Trail is located in the
Pacific Rim. This 77km hike takes most groups from 5-7
days to complete, and reservations are required. Please
note that dogs are NOT allowed on the trail.
- Consider visiting the Pacific Rim in the "off-season"
-- the storm-watching season is spectacular!
